From connecting to nature, to learning about the science behind the ecological crisis, to becoming an agent of change, we believe that all pupils, regardless of their needs and abilities, should have access to outdoor and environmental education. The resources have been designed with SEND pupils in mind, reflecting pupils learning at Lower Key Stage 2 Level or equivalent.

Contents

Module 1: Exploring My Connection to Nature

  • Topic 1: Noticing Nature Through My Senses

  • Topic 2: Observing Nature and My Emotions

  • Topic 3: Actively Engaging with Nature

The aim of this module is to get you and your pupils confident with using the outdoors as your classroom. This is an introductory module to become more aware of nature around us and ways we can engage with it. It also aims to spark your pupils’ interest in working scientifically as they begin to understand human impact on the environment, which will be expanded in the next two modules. Through a variety of topics and activities, pupils will learn ways to build a connection to nature in their direct surroundings, even if urban, and meaningfully engage with the natural environment, through the use of their senses, emotions, observation and active participation.

Module 2: Becoming a Super Scientist

  • Topic 1. All About Gas: What Does the Air Tell Us?

  • Topic 2. All About Liquid: Where Does the Water Go?

  • Topic 3. All About Solids: How Do Plants Help Us?

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop a deeper understanding of the processes and changes occurring in our natural environment. They will learn to observe patterns in the natural world to understand how the world operates and relates to human activities and livelihoods. Exploring the knowledge of gases, liquids and solids, the module is divided into three topics: air, water and plants, and the processes occurring in nature related to them. Students will learn how to observe, test and discuss phenomena linked to each state, study interactions and relationships within and between them and the effect of negative human impact on each of them, with a focus on climate change. They will understand the crucial role of air, water and plants in human lives and how they could help to prevent and adapt to changes.

Module 3: Becoming an Agent of Change

  • Topic 1: Powering Our Planet

  • Topic 2: Where Is Away? Using Our Planet’s Energy

  • Topic 3: Taking Action For the Planet

This module is designed to help students understand how their actions and choices impact their environment in everyday life, and how to evaluate those choices to become an empowered agent of change. Studies show that connection to nature is a strong indicator for sustained pro-environmental action, which, when empowered by knowledge, can curb the effects of eco-anxiety. Students will connect their home life experiences and life skills with subject knowledge and investigate the connections between energy, food and recycling. They will then reflect on their relationship with nature and identify an action they would like to take to support nature and wildlife in their local area. This should empower the students to take ownership over their interests and concerns, and build the capacity to challenge and change the status quo.
